Mohair
Markets...
World mohair
production peaked in 1966 at over 30million Kilograms.
While there have been several revivals production has
been generally decreasing to its current level of about
6million kilograms annually world wide.
It was not until the 1970's that Angora Goats and
mohair production took off in Australia. Growth since
then has been spasmodic with animal numbers peaking in
1988 when we produced approximately 800,000 kg of fibre.
The big world slump in wool prices also affected mohair
but by 1994, without a large stock pile, mohair prices
began to recover. Prices reached an all time high in
December 2000 when "Kid" mohair sold for over $60/kg.
Individual clips were averaging as much as $20/kg at
that time but since then prices have declined to more
acceptable levels (for processors). An Australian clip
now averages about $9/kg. Flocks are small and clips
average about 300kg which is produced by a little over
100 animals every 6 months. Australian production now
totals about 250,000kg which is a very small part of the
5m kg world production.
Australia produced a record 1m.kg in 1986 but now
produces approximately 200,000kg of mohair annually.
However, Australian mohair is now infinitely better in
quality than that which was produced pre genetic
importations.
It is of interest that mohair has been seen as a
volatile commodity. In fact the price and production
trends have been relatively slow to change. Apart from
the turmoil of 1988-1992, mohair has been characterised
by relatively sharp price jumps, triggered by short
supply and fashion demand, followed by slow declines
over 4 to 7 years before another price spike occurs.
World mohair production and marketing is dominated by
South Africa and we are fortunate to have a regular
auction system in place to provide an international base
for trading. Mohair marketing in Australia started in
about 1976 with the development of the concept of
Pooling. Since growers could not possibly produce
sufficient fibre to sell on their own, a method was
required to build sale lots with uniform specification.
The first auctions were held in Sydney and Melbourne and
the first auction selling AWTA Objective Certification
occurred at Cudal NSW at the end of 1980. More
traditional sales were conducted in Melbourne but
gradually mohair marketing was confined to National
Mohair Pool and the Australian Mohair Marketing
Organisation. Both of these broker organisations present
bulk classed (or pooled) fibre, the majority of which
has objective certification of weight, fineness, yield
and vegetable fault content.
Three to four buying agents attend sales on behalf of
French, South African and UK interests. Several of the
mohair buyers also offer direct purchase from
growers.

Mohair Pool Sale 07-02 30th November 2007
In a somewhat unexpected development
in the mohair market, National Mohair Pool reports
a major price drop at its 30th November sale.
The 22,609kg offering sold for an average of
$8.34/kg after limited competition from buyers
resulted in 15 of the 26 lots being passed during
the auction. NMP sold a majority of these after
the auction at prices 80c to $1.20 above the
final bid. NMP only rarely exercises its right
to pass lots but on this occasion it found it
necessary to do as much as possible to gain
acceptable prices for its clients. This action
was especially necessary in view of the very
high quality of the offering despite the abominable
seasonal conditions which most growers faced
throughout the February-August growing period.
Two major initiatives undertaken for this sale
were the extensive use of grower lot testing
and the creation of “super” lots
from grower lines with low CV(D). Unfortunately
the market was not in a mood to look at the
attempts to create special quality lines on
this occasion.
Buyers pointed to low processing orders, high
pipeline volumes (especially in YG and Adult
types) and a large catalogue for the Cape sale
on Tuesday 4th December. Mohair has been selling
well above the trend line for two years under
pressure from low production and good customer
demand but this sale represents a major, and
unfortunate, correction in the market. It had
been thought that the relatively high prices
of the last 2 years might have halted the steady
decline in world production of mohair but if
a general downturn in prices is imminent, the
mills can only expect a further drop in production.
Please note that NMP has a specific order for
17+cm long adult fibre at a price of $15/kg.
It is not suggested that this type of fibre
be produced for anything but this specific order.
Growers should let NMP know if they are going
to attempt to shear this sort of fleece in April/May.
Fibre will only be accepted from growers who
have indicated their willingness to supply mohair
for this special order.
The next sale will be in mid May 2008 and NMP
wishes everyone a happy Christmas and a prosperous
new year.

Australian Mohair Marketing Org Ltd D2007
Sale Nov 2007
D2007 Sale held 23rd November.
The final sale for 2007 saw a 100% clearance
of the 27,661 Kgs offered, with a sale average
price of 9.97c/kg. The last sale for 2007 produced
a similar trend to the previous AMMO sale held
in late Sept 2007.
Once again one of the major contributing factors
to the downward pressure on prices, was the
impact of the high level of the Australian dollar.
The dollar had risen from 83.5 cents US in late
September to approximately 88 US cents for our
last sale held 23-1107.
Competition for the sale was generally good
across most lots on offer. In a effort to extract
the best possible prices on the day management
again employed the tactic of passing in some
20 of the total 36 lots. All but three lots
that were passed in realised better prices through
private negotiation.

Australian Mohair Marketing Org Ltd C2007
Sale Sept 2007
Held 28 Sept 2007 - at NARRANDERA
NSW
100% clearance of the 32,032 kgs offered with
a sale average of $10.40/kg
Unfortunately the strong Australian Dollar on
the sale date (US$0.8812) had a negative effect
on prices at this sale. Prices, however still
topped $23.00 with very fine Kids making 2370c/kg
and 2360c/kg for A and B lengths respectively.
Good Kid made from 1925c/kg to 1950c/kg whilst
good Young Goat lines made from 1340c/kg to
1360c/kg. Good Fine Hair made 870 to 885c/kg
and Fine Fine Hair made from 910 to 914c/kg.

Australian Mohair Marketing Org Ltd B2007
Sale June 2007
Once again the quality of mohair
on offer and level of preparation of the sale
was praised highly by all participating buyers,
However prices didn’t meet pre-sale expectations
due to a combination of factors including uncertainty
at the Cape due to exchange rate fluctuations,
and the high $A (US$0.83.5). This had a negative
effect on prices able to be paid on the day.
I can assure all producers contributing to the
sale that AMMO Ltd did everything it could to
obtain the maximum price possible on the day.
The auctioneer on behalf of AMMO Ltd’s
producers tried valiantly to extract every cent
that could be obtained for each lot. To ensure
“no stone was left un-turned’ in
this regard, some 19 or 20 lots were passed
in at auction with all but one lot achieving
a better price via private negotiation.
Although prices were down I feel we could have
not done any more under the circumstances prevailing
on the day, and the $11.65 average price is
still a reasonable achievement. The top kid
price was 2435c/kg for the BSFKID with BFKID
making 2350. The Fine Kid Second Style Line
(FKID2) was 21.4 micron and made 2360c/kg. The
top KID price was the 2170 paid for the KID2
line which tested at 23.3 micron, continuing
the trend of the priority of micron when determining
price. B length lines were again keenly sought
after.

National
Mohair Pool Sale 07-01 25th May 2007
At its first mohair auction for
the year, National Mohair Pool offered 21,434kg
of mohair in 30 lots. The sale produced a complete
clearance at an average price of 12.39/kg greasy
up 8% or 89c on the last NMP sale in November.
Prices also firmed over an earlier Australian
sale held in April which averaged $12.05, and
defied a recent downward trend exhibited in
the South African auctions. The price increase
occurred despite a considerably stronger Australian
dollar (0.82 v’s 0.77 in November).
A feature of this sale was the entry of a Hong
Kong based company into the auction market.
The company has previously bought small quantities
of very long mohair on an irregular basis, but
for the first time has become interested in
the A length (13-16cm) mohair in the commercial
textile length range. The company purchased
most of the A length mohair from the National
Mohair Pool offering paying a premium of between
$1 and $5/kg. Click

Australian Mohair Marketing Org Ltd A2007
Sale 13th April 2007
The first sale for 2007 was characterised by
strong bidding as a result of solid underlying
demand and low International and National supply.
The overall average price for the auction sale
of 34,757 kgs was
1205c/kg which was up from the 1060c/kg average
for the previous sale in December 2006. The
total fibre sold in the period including private
treaty sales was 35,019.5kgs, a 100% clearance
of Kgs offered.
All buyers present at the sale commented very
positively in relation to the presentation of
the fibre on offer and the general quality of
the lines.
PRICE TRENDS
Good fine kids were up 24 -25%, good kids were
up 15-16%. Short kid, “C” kid was
up 16% on the previous sale price, whilst the
reintroduced “C Fine kid line made 1700c/kg.
Strong kids were up 21-25%, whilst good young
goats were up 10-13%. Good fine fine hair was
up 6-9% whist on average good fine hair was
down slightly.
Light stain and cots also achieved significant
price gains.

Australian Mohair Marketing Org Ltd D2006
Sale 1st Dec 2006
The Final sale of 2006 saw AMMO
offer 34,212 kgs by auction at Narrandera on
December 1st and a further 347 sold by private
treaty achieving a 100% clearance. The sale
average price being 1060c/kg. Taking all things
into perspective and looking at the bigger picture
is often more valuable than just looking at
one sale’s results in isolation.
Yes the December 2006 sale average price is
down on the previous sale, but importantly,
when you look at the average price, which is
still a very respectable 1060c/kg, this is the
sixth consecutive sale held by AMMO Ltd where
the average prices per Kg for the particular
sale period has been above 1000c/kg.

National Mohair Pool Sale 06-02 24th November
2006
At its scheduled 6 monthly auction of mohair,
National Mohair Pool (NMP) offered 21,012kg of mohair in
28 lots in Sydney on the 24th November.
The sale achieved a total clearance, grossing
$241,629 (ex GST) at an average price of $11.50/kg
greasy. The result was down on our last (May) average of
$14.76, but reverses the downward trend of more recent
Australian sales (AMMO’s June sale average $13.10/kg,
AMMO’s September average $11.22). Prices failed to
follow the upward trend seen at the Cape sale on
Tuesday, and buyers pointed out that some resistance had
been flagged by manufacturers apparently unwilling to
maintain high prices driven by short supply. It was
suggested that manufacturers are prepared to move to
other fibres which, at present, are available at cheaper
rates.
Nevertheless, Australian mohair prices remain at the
higher end of long term averages reflecting the general
short supply of mohair on the world market.

Australian Mohair Marketing Org Ltd C2006
Sale 29 Sept 2006
The third sale of 2006 saw AMMO offer
29,774kgs in part by auction at Narrandera and part by
private treaty sale, achieving a 100% clearance. It is
pleasing to note that the sale average price of 1122c/kg
eclipsed the sale average for the same period last year
of 1046c/kg although was down 14% on the sale average
for June 2006.
The decrease in prices from those achieved at AMMO
Ltd’s last sale in June this year, followed the trend
set in the recent series of Cape Sales in South Africa,
which had to be anticipated. However, prices achieved at
this sale compare favourably with average prices from
the Cape sale held earlier in September - i.e. Fine Kids
were up 6% and good kids up 19% while Strong Kids were
up 1.5% and young Goat was up12% on the South African
averages.

Sale 16 June 2006
The B2006 sale saw AMMO offer 48,556 kgs
by auction & private treaty, achieving a 100% total
clearance. The sale was characterised by low demand
which forced prices back somewhat on our previous March
sale. Adult prices remain firm however at prices above
$10/kg and the overall sale average of $13.10/kg was
down only $1.97 on our previous sale Demand at the
finer end of the market was down and buyers were blaming
the fall and then rise of the Australian dollar, low
demand internationally, the end of the financial year
and the European summer season and holidays. It was
however, pleasing to see a 100% clearance once again in
a depressed market.

National Mohair Pool Sale 06-01 19th May
2006 At its scheduled 6 monthly
auction of mohair in Sydney, NMP offered 27,265kg of
fibre and obtained a total clearance with a gross value
of $402,475.90, an average of $14.76/kg greasy. This
average was up 75c or 5% on the last NMP sale in
November 2005. Despite the near record prices the
sale was somewhat disappointing and failed to reach
price levels achieved in the Cape over the previous 3
months. Buyers commented that demand had softened and
that their limits had been reduced by their clients. In
line with comments made in South Africa, the mohair
processing sector is apparently offering some resistance
to what it considers to be excessive prices resulting
from short supply and a high fashion demand for
mohair. Demand for Adult and Young Goat fibre was
steady while Kids and Outsorts showed some increases on
the November sale.

Org D2005 Sale 9th Dec 2005 The D2005
sale saw AMMO Ltd offer 39,639kgs by auction in
Narrandera on December 9th, achieving a 99.5% clearance.
(Unsold was a grower lot which failed to meet the
grower's reserve). The sale produced an Australian
record sale average price of 15-07c/kg across all lines,
beating the previous record of 1468c/kg also previously
held by AMMO Ltd (Dec 2000). Another record was broken
when a short fine adult lot of 13 bales sold for
1610c/kg. The top price achieved of 2700c/kg was for a 2
bale lot of B Fine Kid tested at 23.6micron and with an
82.1% yield. There was extremely strong bidding and
competition for virtually all lots on offer. Low
International supply combined with strong demand in the
medium and courser end of the catalogue were the major
contributing factors to the record sale average
price of 1507c/kg. Exporters/buyers did convey their
concern in relation to the sustainability of such high
price levels especially in relation to adult fibre (I.e.
courser micron types). Craig Clancy Manager

National Mohair Pool
2005-02 Auction Sale 18th November
2005 National Mohair Pool P/L
provided a small offering of some 22,871 Kg for sale and
achieved a total clearance at very strong rates. The
sale produced an average price of $14.01/kg greasy up
some 50% on the previous NMP sale in May and some 30% on
the last AMMO sale in September. The sale saw some
extraordinary prices, particularly for the large adult
lines which doubled in price. The sale followed 3
consecutive sales in South Africa which saw strong rises
in price as buyers struggled to gain sufficient stocks
for their needs. It is obvious that there is a large
short fall in supply following the extinction of
stockpiles in the US and the continued fall in
production in Texas, South Africa and
Australia. Buyers expressed some concerns about this
price setting and cautioned that growers should not see
the current prices as indicative of future demand.
However, it was recognised that the continued fall in
production over the last few years was likely to have
been caused by a mis-match between returns to growers
and prices which processors were prepared to pay. No
doubt this situation is in the process of
resolution.
NMP has already commenced preparation of its first
2006 sale. Doug Stapleton, Manager

Org C2005 Sale 23rd Sept 2005 The end
of the C05 season culminated in a successful auction on
23rd September. The auction was characterised by very
strong bidding almost right across the board. Young goat
and adult types defied the trend at the most recent Cape
Sale (20/9/05), by posting significant price
gains. Good Young Goat was up 4 to 22%, while average
Young Goat was up 7%. Fine Fine Hair was up 18% to 37%
while good fine hair was up from 4% to 10% and average
fine hair was up 13%. The good hair lines were also up
from 18% to 26% while average hair was up
12%. Following a similar trend to the Cape, Kid types
were generally down from 7% to 10%. Demand and a
strong desire to fill orders in an environment
characterised by low supply levels would have
contributed significantly to these price
increases. Once again fineness (of micron) influenced
price in most categories, far more significantly than
staple length. Craig Clancy Manager

Org B2005 Sale 10th June
2005 Mohair sold via private
treaty throughout the season and via auction 10th June
2005. A total of 53,207kgs sold this season—with a 97.7%
clearance of the lines offered. (Note: Unsold lot was a
grower lot passed in at auction as it failed to meet the
grower’s reserve. Test results refer to lots sold at
AUCTION) A total of 150,156 KGS sold for the 2004/05
Financial year Market Comment: The B2005 auction
held Friday 10th June saw demand and price trends very
similar to those experienced at the last Cape Sale held
the 7th June. This sale was characterised by spirited
bidding and strong demand. Kid prices were down a little
when compared to our last sale in March, but were at
similar levels to those obtained at (NMP’s) auction held
6th May in Sydney. As with the Cape Sale earlier in
the week, Young Goat and Adult lines saw significant
gains. Young Goats were up 22 – 40% when compared to
(NMP) auction prices and adults up 15-30% whilst the
stain price was up 10-11% and veg fault lines up
18-38%. Craig Clancy Manager

National Mohair Pool 2005-01 Auction Sale
6th May 2005 Mohair continues to sell
at rates nearly double those for wool and values
continue to rise. At its regular 6 monthly auction of
mohair, National Mohair Pool offered some 26,479kg in 34
lots. The sale achieved a total clearance at an average
price of $9.35/kg greasy, up $1.88/kg on the average
achieved in November 2004. The sale was characterized
by some indifferent test results but buyers seemed
accepting of this and bidding was brisk. All three
regular buyers were active with adult fibre attracting
significant demand with a rise in price of approximately
$1.60/kg. Young Goat and Kid lines were generally
slightly easier in price and outsorts were firm on
November 2004 prices. The new experimental EGT (Every
Goat Tested) lines achieved the expected test
specifications and generally produced prices from par to
$4.00/kg above traditionally described lines. Doug
